Vocational Service
The vocational service will continue to be partners to Mencap Pathways in the delivery of the DWP job preparation program for people with an acquired brain injury. Our relationship with Knowsley and Scope will enable us to continue to provide ongoing support to clients in work.
For the coming year we have signed up to 2 new innovative programs supporting sustained employment.
(1) ENGAGEMENT TO RETENTION The vocational service will be working with Working Links and other partners delivering in-work support to 200 people with disabilities over the next 3 years.
(2) LEARNING AND SKILLS COUNCIL ROUTEWAY TO EMPLOYMENT. The second program is in partnership with Greenbank Project and others. This program is also about sustained employment achieved through the participation of a number of partners.
Throughout the year the Working Life Service has supported people employed by Wirral council with job coaching and reasonable adjustment advice. We have also been contracted by Access to work to support people and will look to develop working in this area in the future.
The Working Life service believes that through partnerships we can deliver a more holistic service to our clients. We will be looking to improve the quality our vocational support further by training our staff to NVQ level 3 advice and guidance and ensuring that sessional staff are qualified to this level as a minimum.
For further information, please contact Gerry Tyrrell on 0151 298 3288 or gerry@neurosupport.org.uk.
GREENFINGERS WANTED
Have you thought of the great outdoors being one with nature, no I mean gardening; well we might have just the project to get your fingers GREEN.
We have been looking into “A Plot on the Landscape” yes you've guessed an allotment
I have been exploring the possibility of acquiring an allotment. It is still in the early stages yet, but I would like to bring together people who may have an interest in gardening or think they would like to try something different for a change, no experience necessary. We need to form a planting committee, sorry planning. The intention will be that this group will be people who want to use the allotment on a regular basis and take responsibility for maintaining it in the long term, in other words watch it grow.
My role will be to assist and make links with other relevant organisations and help with funding through the Centre.
Identify what resources are needed to start up.
Ongoing needs of the plot.
What support needs to be in place.
Funding
I don’t want people to worry about managing or having too much responsibility until they are absolutely ready to do so and if this requires training or support then this can be worked through.
If you would like to get involved contact me John Fox 0151 298 3282

Following a 3 year grant from the Department of Health we have been able
To establish the Lifestyles service as part of the Working Life Service.
We recognise that some people face considerable barriers to moving
Forward in their lives. Lifestyles has been set up to work with those
Farthest away from employment and to help reduce or eliminate those
Barriers. For people who are unable to work or who are not yet ready
For work, Lifestyles will help to find meaningful alternatives to work
Such as voluntary work, training or leisure opportunities. We also
Provide a number of interventions to support people to move on.
* A number of courses to help individuals to regain self-confidence and self-esteem including confidence building, yoga, Tai
Chi, art, relaxation, creative writing, basic IT, numeracy and literacy.
* Counselling
* Welfare rights advice
* Debt advice
* Pensions and other financial advice
* Access to legal advice around Employment Law, Disability
Discrimination Act, Community Care Law and Housing
For each person that enters the Lifestyles service, an individual action
Plan will be drawn up that will support the person to move forward in a
Structured way. Elements of the plan may include any part of the Lifestyles service and also signposting to more suitable organisations.
For some people, this may result in a transfer to the vocational service
Of the Working Life Service in order to move towards employment
We have recruited a new worker, John Fox, to run this service.
The grant will also enable us to set up a peer advocacy service. We
Will shortly be holding a consultation event to determine exactly how
This service will work.
If you are interested in using the services of
Lifestyles then please contact John Fox on 0151 298 3282 or john@neurosupport.org.uk.
The article about John Fox was recently published in “Glance” A Newsletter of Neurosupport. If you wish to be added to the “Glance" mailing list contact the Information Officer using our telephone number or pick one up in reception next time you visit the centre.
